If you’re in a same-sex relationship, formally registering your relationship as a civil partnership or marrying could provide important increased security for you as a couple. The Civil Partnership Act [December 2005] and the Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Act 2013 are in place to ensure you are both treated the same as a heterosexual couple.
That’s all well & good, but why should I care? Well, the laws of intestacy apply equally to same sex couples as they do to straight couples….so, if you’re arranging any financial protection (life insurance, critical illness, income protection) for yourself and/or your partner and/or your children, you’ll want to make sure it’s set up properly. That means ensuring policies are set up to pay out to the right person at the right time and with as little tax as possible!
Here at Your Next Mortgage & Yournextpolicy.co.uk, we welcome the LGBT community and will help you set up your cover in a way that’s right for you.
The financial services industry is sometimes a bit slow with this stuff (just our opinion), but they are starting to pay attention to ensure that everyone is treated fairly, so it’s worth having a chat to see what’s what.
